SAP Designer Lighting and Electrical

Jonny and Tania proudly own and collaborate together to run this electrical business servicing the Illawarra. Jonny has been an electrician for many years, but has always been into creating a different path than the norm and so SAP was created. Jonny started his electrical apprenticeship in the late 90’s, and ended up alongside his boss doing many electrical jobs over a time period of 10 years, 100’s of new work on Hotondo Homes Southern Highlands as well as many renovations. This was a great time of experience as Jonny had to learn how to design and implement the complete electrical process for some great quality homes. After this Jonny went on maintaining a large conference centre with all the electrical demands a place like that can have. Installing many fans, heaters, power points, lights, outside lighting for outdoor activities and gardens. Generally keeping it electrically sound for many years. Working out maximum demand calculations and energy efficiency and also fault finding which was valuable experience. Providing power solutions for when there was loss of power to the campsite through generators and batteries so groups could continue through stormy weather. The next stage came when Jonny started helping his brother in his timber milling company working with Australian hardwood. upon noticing the wonderful timber offcuts, that often were leftover from amazing timber slabs that were turned into hardwood tables, Jonny wondered if he could create timber hanging lights from them. From there all sorts of things were learnt and created, lights imbedded in hanging railway sleepers were rustic and great for pubs, timber with hanging globes for cafe’s, resturants and homes, modern strip “blade” lights for business receptions. There was a lot to work out with design, style, quality of lights, lumen distribution, beam angles, fixtures, finishes, how to mount them and hang them at correct and even heights. This led Jonny onto doing a lighting design course which covered things like light spacing, feature lights, task lighting and accent lighting. On the back of this is when SAP Designer Lighting and Electrical was established, and since then we have completed lighting schemes and installations for houses, cafe’s, offices, and general electrical as well as sheds, festoon, and festive lighting. We have found our unique experience has helped people when they are after something a little different and have a project in mind, offering ideas and implementation in lighting and electrical. We have enjoyed the journey with all those who have used SAP and look forward to shed LIGHT on many creative endeavours in the future.

LED LIGHTING BENEFITS

Sap installed 36 LED downlights in this beautiful place this week. It’s amazing the difference nice, new LED downlights can make in a home. There are many reasons to change from existing halogen downlights to LED’s. We all know LED’S cost significantly less to run but do you know it can be around 80% less expensive. Over a year halogens if run for 6 hrs a day can cost nearly $900 as opposed to LED’S to run the same amount your cost is around $120 over a 10 year period that’s a saving of over $7,500. Along with saving you a tonne of money LED’s do not run hot so risk of fire is avoided.

At SAP Designer Lighting when replacing downlights, we check there is an earth cable at each point ( a legal requirement in the AS3000 wiring rules) we use sockets so future ones can be easily replaced/installed and check the polarity and if the safety switch/circuit breaker is working to make sure you know your electrical installation is done correctly.

Price’s are rising, what can you do to keep costs down?

The Cost of Electricity is rising this winter. The great news with lighting is that when LED’S are installed they can reduce the power cost significantly, which is great since we all need good lighting in our homes.

Coming into winter however, heating although important and needed can become very costly. An example of how you can keep your heating costs down are below:

The three main types of heating are convection, radiant and conduction heaters. Pro’s and con’s for each. Regardless of your choice consider how you are heating your house. Let’s compare 2 different scenarios.

The first way, we have 5 heaters. 4 bedroom and one living room heater. In the winter months we decide to use all 5 heaters 3 hours a day, assuming the bedroom heaters are 1500 watts each and the living room one is 2400 watts that equates to 1500 x4 x3hrs =18000 watts. And 2400 x1 x3hrs =7200 watts. That equals a total of 25200 watts per day or 25.2kw/hours. 25.2 x 0.25 equals $6.30 a day x7 days ($44.10) at 13 weeks to heat your house over winter it will cost around $573.30.

The second way is to use the same heaters, but the living room one for 2.5hrs at night, and the bedroom ones for 45mins a night, each with the door closed before bedtime to warm the room. This equates to 2400 x2.5 =6000 watts and 1500 x4 x.75 =4500 watts together that’s 10500 watts per day or 10.5k/watts at 0.25cents per kw hour it equals $2.63 per day x7 days ($18.41) x 13weeks $233 total

So as you can see just by simply changing how you choose to use your heating as opposed to what heaters you’ve chosen to buy you can save a massive $340 over the winter. If electricity prices were to double that’s $680 in savings just by being wise as to when and where you use them.

We hope you have a safe, warm and power wise winter.
